My car has been making an ever so slight "noise" that is annoying me. When the car is in neutral and the clutch out (off the floor), there is a whirring noise that I can hear. Push the clutch in and it goes away. Release the clutch and it comes back. It is almost like when the clutch pedal is out, it has engaged the input shaft on the tranny but because it is not in gear it is just spinning freely inside the tranny. Is something in there that could be free spinning that is in the process of failing.
It has been doing it for some time, and I recently changed the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing, so that is not the problem.
The old throwout bearing that came out of the car disentegrated when it was taken out (ball bearings fell on the ground), so I thought that was the problem even though the noise was happening the opposite of the normal throwout failure (pedal released instead of depressed).
Is there something in the transmission that could be wearing out that would be making the noise. There are no other symptons of a tranny failure. Just makes me wonder if a failure is on its way.
It is pretty common for them to make a little noise in neutral. The cluster shaft turns in neutral with the clutch engaged. The gears and bearings make a little noise. If the bearings are worn, it will be rather loud. There is nothing that you can do without a rebuild, so I wouldnt worry too much unless it gets worse.
