I was just checking my plugs, they look OK, but are a little rusted on the outside. I was wondering if they lose any performance with age. They have been in the car for about 4 years and have about 3000 miles on them. They are AC Delco plugs.
I was also thinking about replacing them with one of the other brands, like split fire or Bosch Platinum plugs, is there any benifit to these plugs or should I just stay with AC Delco. Thanks for any comments. :seeya
Don't worry about external rust on the plugs. If the electrodes are relatively clean and gapped correctly, 3k miles isn't much at all. If the engine's stock, you can run virtually any OEM or aftermarket plug w/o a problem. Personally, I switched to Bosch platinums because I don't plan on driving over 6k mi/yr or significantly modifying the engine, and the plugs can be a hassle to change...
Don't forget to put some anti-seize on the plug threads before installation...
Be careful running platinums. Rule-of-thumb is run what your car calls for. Non-platinum car's can have issuses using platinums. The heat ranges are a little different. Most pros say to keep what it calls for...I'm sure others will give their opinions...
