Ok now I have the brake light coming on when I turn the ignition switch which is what I believe is suppose to happen. I also have the high beam indicator working. However I do not have any dash lights. This may be a dumb question and I think I already know the answer but here it goes. Do all the grounds in the center console area need to be in place before the lights in the main guage cluster will work? :D I am thinking yes but want to make sure.
I'm not sure, but my guage lights and speedo/tach lights went out at once. Turns out to be the headlight switch not getting power to them. I bypassed it for now by plugging into one of the ignition sockets on the fuse panel and running a wire with a fuse in it to the contacts where the fuse for the dash lights are. You might try this for a test..
I believe they share a ground that end at the radio.
I kind of remember my radio ground being left open and the dash lights not working. Buy a good electrical schematic, well worth the money. Good luck...
Yes, in the short form answer, all grounds must be hooked up, especially that heavy black wiere with the loop on it, that bolts to the birdcage up above the driver's kick panel...it's the main instrumentation ground for bulbs, and gauges....it's about a 10 -12 ga wire....there are two wires that slide onto each spade terminal on the back of the tach and the speedo, and that black wire continues over to the center gauge cluster....
Thanks, that is pretty much what I figured. I was veryy carefull getting all of the connections behind the speedo and tach put back correctly but I am still working on the center cluster so I will need to check all the grounds tonight and try to put some juice to them again.
How does paint affect ground wires? Should there be a bare metal connection?
Allways best to scrape down to bare metal before connecting any electricals in any position....I wonder if you take a voltmeter to your housings what voltages you get, from say Tach housing to frame ground...chassis....
