x-otic and i took the day off work and went for a cruise and we were out about 20 miles or so out and i started to smell gas when i got on it.Thinking nothing of it maybe just hitting up against the cap and smelling fumes.Well we got back closer to town and some guy pulls up next to us and say "hey your leaking gas"x-otic just says ok thanks, meanwhile i start to panic knowing the exuast is right there. We get it back to the house i could feel the car starting to slow down losing pressure,i pull into the driveway and the exuast is now smoking fuel spraying right onto the exuast from the tank,i got the hose and sprayed it down till exuast was cool.Somehow the fuel injection hose split,so im gone to get some high pressure from our local hose and fitting shop and replace all of it again. So close to almost losing her.
Re: almost burnt the vette up today (patsnitrovette)
Whew - lucky.
Think heat was an issue ?
I had gas dumping all over the hot muffler before.
You don't know what to do - run or try to clean it up.
Glad it work out good (like my situation).
Don't ask about cleaning around the tank opening with a vacuum. DUH !
:seeya
i used the stuff from napa, but for now on never again,it was about 15 inchs from the muffler so i think it wasnt heat related just blew out.yeah panic set in real fast, running around looking for the hose watching the smoke rise off the mufflers.
Re: almost burnt the vette up today (patsnitrovette)
Damn Pat, you just got that running again! Maybe you ought to take a run down to SW Hot Rodz or Gambardello's and get some Russels or Earls hose. I don't trust any of the stuff from Napa or Pep Boys. Maybe even get some good braided hose since it's near the mufflers. Good luck to you but I think you already have that.
Re: almost burnt the vette up today (patsnitrovette)
You see Pat forgot to add a part of the story.
After all this happen Pat’s wife call from out of state. He told her what happen and she said “that car is breaking down every time you drives it”. I said “he need a new vette”. She said “OK” So don’t you think Pat should get a Z06..! :)
Al, i just might have to take a trip to Gambardello's and run a whole line in stainless braided high pressure, better safe then sorry.
Corey, that would be my choice EB with mod red interior
I dont scared easy it takes a lot to get me worried,and let me tell you i was s h i t t i n g bricks.
Like xotic said ,the wife had just called when we got back and she said just go get a new vette, that first month would be great till i wrote the check for the first payment.

If somebody told me I was leaking gas I think I would pull over right there, not drive home first!!! Now, if he told me I was leaking coolant I might try to make it home.... keeping an eye on the temp guage.. :) MJ
Re: almost burnt the vette up today (patsnitrovette)
might i suggest marine grade fuel line, about $1.50 a foot at boats USA or boaters world, of course if you dont live on a coast you wont be seining this, but its thicker, much more durable, and approved for more uses, basicly better all around, and at a great price. i used it when no stores near me carried fuel line big enough for mine, only ricer sized, i took in a peice to the parts store, he wnret back and was like what the hell does this go one the closest we got is half this size, its only 3/8" but i guess they never see it.
DAMN, Pat, that been ME, there'd been more a leaking than just GAS.....
I very paranoid over that stuff, I check those lines a LOT, jusr replaced my lines up front about 6 months ago, getting a bit tired, and better safe for ten bux than sorry.....I used EARLS...shop just around corner....
on the boat, I used blue double wrapped Aeorquip hose, differant install, and USCG requirements though....
Wow what a close call. Your vette has too much sweat equity in it to see something like that happen.
I just had to replace all my hoses since they were starting to look a little dry rotted. I used low pressure hoses type J30R7 and 30R7 since the 82 TBI fuel pump pressure is only around 12PSI.
The TPI fuel pump is around 70PSI? High pressure fuel injection hoses (250PSI) have a difference rating stamping. Of course I learned all of this after I had the new hoses at home. Would rather have had the higher pressure hoses.
 Pat I can relate to this. The same thing happened to me 2 summers ago. I just filled the gas tank and went over to my in-laws to meet up with the rest of the family. When I got out of the car I could hear "tssss tssss tssss". I looked under the car & saw gas leaking from the gas tank right onto the hot muffler (still had the undercar exhaust). It seems a vent hose on the drivers side on top of the tank had ruptured and was siphoning all the gas out of the tank  . I grabbed the garden hose and sprayed the exhaust down as soon as I saw it !
I never really felt comfortable with plain rubber hose, even high pressure rated. It was the one thing I really didn't like about the Holley kit I used, lots of rubber links. Tank-pump pump-hardline hardline-fuel rails regulator-return hardline return hardline-tank. I said screw it, flopped down the extra cash and went totally braided stainless steel. I figured it was just my paranoia but I do tend to worry about the car while driving so I figured I was just buying peace of mind. If you switch to braided SS and have any questions I'd be happy to help.
Re: almost burnt the vette up today (patsnitrovette)
Wow, glad you caught it in time. I've also had fuel leaking issues. Mine was with a new fuel pump though. I've also replaced all my fuel lines with stainless covered hoses. I'm still constantly a little paranoid though. Once you have a fuel leak, it's hard to be comfortable about it again.
