Finally got the transmission installed, exhaust back on, car ready to run - started her up after a couple weeks up on jacks, ran like a dream! We started clearing the area out behind her, ready to drive away. My dad and I bent over to start picking up our tools... car dumped about 7 qts of tranny fluid in about 90 seconds.
the fluid appears to be coming from between the (new) torque converter and the transmission - any ideas as to what is going on? Is that the location of the front seal? The guy who rebuilt the transmission for me reinstalled the torque converter, and the guy who is letting me borrow his garage stall attached the transmission up to the engine, all this taking p[ace in my absence. We reattached the driveshaft, and the exhaust, and all the other peripherals. Any diagnoses? Who's mistake was this, most likely?
Last question - is the front seal between the torque converter and the engine, or between the torque converter and the transmission? I'm not an overly experienced mechanic, as you can probably tell...
The torque converter slides over some toothed shafts and there will be a pump and the front seal. The torque converter bolts to the flexplate. The seal is between the torque converter and transmission. There is fluid in your torque converter also.
Its hard to say whos fault it is. Sometimes the seal can get damaged by the sharp edges(if any) on the convertor hub when the convertor is put on. The spring in the seal can also be knocked out. One thing is for sure, its gonna have to come back out of there. I suppose its also possible that one of the pump bolts was left out. Or the pump to case gasket or convertor hub seal was left out all togeather. or.....
