Default Thiking about a new carbuerator...

I am thinking about goin for a better carbuerator. I have about 7 inches of vacuumm so Vacuum secondaries won't really work well with my application. Does any body have any suggestions backed by reasons and not brand loyalty ;)

i had the orgional quadrajet on my 76 when i got it but the secondaries werent opening and i went around to get advice and prices. i figured id do all the work my self and was about to get a rebuild kit. well a local mechnaic said he would sell me a 600 performer by edlebrock for 125 bucks, hey thats cheaper than a rebuild i htought so i sat on the deal for about 2 days and then went back and bought it from him. for about 160-175 dollars i had installed it on my stock manifold, needed an adapter kit cause its a square bore carb and spread bore manifold. it has the secondaries but they open by air demand from the engine. i have about 200 miles on it so far and love it, works like a charm and im running much faster now. i am very pleased with it. they have emmision and non emmision ones so you will probobly want the emmisions one so you can keep the egr valuve, if you have one. i took mine off and built a block plate for it. also you need to take off the heat choke, its right next to the egr valve, both bolt into the intake manifold. th heat choke should be ok w/out a block off plate, just keep the orgional plate on there. and youll need a square to spread bore conversion kit, sold by pepboys and track auto for about 15-20 bucks. and a throttle bracket and a spring holder, given if you want to you can make the last two your self. edlebrock also makes the Q-jet, a direct replacement for the quadrajet, ive heard its a direct bolt on and all you need is a new gasket. this might work for you but its about 350 new.

info on my new carb
edlebrock performer 600 non emmision
it had been used on a 454 w/ a radical cam setup fpr 2 months and the owner upgraded to a 750 cause he needed a bigger carb. it had about 200 miles or less on it.
asking price was 150
i talked him down to 125

hope this helps

The way I understand it, the Q-Jet is an air demand carb not a vacuum carb on the secondaries.

BTW, love my Q-jet.

What are your engine specs?
What transmission?
What rear gear ratio?
What carb are you using now?

I'm a carb rookie but with a little more information, you might get more responses.
