I was thinking about the new tank I installed last fall. I think there is suposed to be a vapor line that comes off the top on the driver's side? My cars in the shop so I can't check, there may have been a small hose with a bolt in it to eliminate this. I don't want to drive around with that open, I've heard fire and fiberglass do not mix! Would a fix be getting a vented cap or can I replace what was there? Thanks Pat
What year Vette? Both my 71' and 78 have the vent line going to the carbon canister in the left fender well. It's probably best to put it back to stock when dealing with fuel vapors. BOOM!
Fuel vapor exiting over the exhaust is definitely not a good idea...and plugging the line will definitely cause pressure build up in the tank.
The part in question is called a seperator assembly, and is basically smog equipment, that works by drawing fuel vapor by vacuum from the tank, through the cannister (located behind front wheel), PCV and carb to be reburnt during combustion.
I think the seperator has a return valve and I haven't seen it available as a new part......which means you'll have to try the wreckers.......unless you still have access to your old tank????? Or it may be there but not hooked up...the rubber hose should connect to the metal vapour pipe which is screwed to the frame (runs alongside the brake line). You should be able to hook the hose to the line without removing anything. The vapour pipe starts on top of the rear frame extension, just above the muffler.
A vented cap may work....but it's probably best to get it working the way it's designed. Just make sure it's all working....once when I overfilled my tank, the seperator allowed fuel to siphon all the way to the fuel cannister
