My bro was driving home the '81, and obviously, had a blowout. The entire tread came off of the Firestone, leaving only the metal part of the tire - tire still fully aired. I guess that's not really called a blowout...damage is decent :banghead:
This sounds to me a lot like the Ford Explorer tire situation. I would call Firestone and give them hell. A tire should not seperate at the treads unless it is badly worn, underinflated , or poorly made.
My friend with a '99 white Hardtop C5 put hers in the canal the other night. She was exiting an off ramp when her tire blew and caused her to swerve and put the Vette in the ditch. They of course totalled it.:cry
OUCH!! That really hurts, hope Firestone does something. Luckily your brother wasn't hurt at all. My uncle told me a story about a C3 back in the 70's when they had the same problem with their tires, and both passengers were killed. Very dangerous situation. Good luck getting touch with someone that can help you at firestone.
Were they Firestone Firehawks, Firehawk Indy 500's, or something else?
How old were the tires? What air pressure do you run in them? How fast were you traveling?
I'm running a set of the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/miker//02061929fix.jpg so I would REALLY like to know the details.
I once had a tire throw the tread while staying inflated. It caved in the quarter panel really bad. That was on a '74 Firebird Formula.
Over the decades, I have had some real garbage out of Goodyear too, so you all really down on F-en irestone don't surprise me, but I will never buy a Goodyear either....
firestone gets this nasty wrap because fraud, oops, i mean ford slammed them durning the whole exploder thing. i don't believe there is anything wrong with firestones on average. if you believe in bridgestone tires, you might as well believe in firestones too. same tire. what is the pressure? i'm sure it gets pretty hot down there in beaumont so pressure and temperature are a huge factor. :skep:
here in vegas, i can pass a half dozen cars a day in the summer sitting on the side of the road with shreaded tires. i'm sure they're not all firestones. hell, i had a tread separation in my truck last year with some cheezy 'general' tires. especially in hot conditions, too little pressure can easily result in overtemping a tire.
as for the firestones, i'll have to experience it before i believe it. i ran a set of firehawk sv50's for years. finally burned them up in a donut contest at a speedventures event. burnt them all the way down to the steel belts and they still held air. (that's them in my sig pic at that same event) i'd rather buy firestones at full price than discounted goodyears.
BTW, i'm glad nobody was hurt. i feel for the damage to the vette.

I Have had Very bad luck with Goodyears. Terrible... Cone shaped, pull to one side. Hard to balance. One was 1/4" out of round. I had one fly apart one our van. I replaced a completely WORN out set of BF goodrich T/A's with a new set of Goodyear GT's on one Corvette a few years ago. Instantly worse. I kew I had made a mistake within two blocks. Ihad to have them shave to make the car drivable. Goodyears? NEVER again.
