I'm going to rebuild the rear suspension of my '74 454. I've found several kits for the front end (which I've already done with Zip-corvette's front end poly package), but nothing for the rear.
I'd like to stay mostly stock, except use poly bushings (rubber dries out fast in the desert). I wouldn't mind moving to a mono-spring either, I hear it weighs less, and gives a better overall ride.
What kinds of options do I have?
Do I go with rebuilt trailing arms, or do I rebuild them myself (what do rebuilt trailing arms offer over what i can do at home?)
I'm keeping the driveline and all components, this is just the suspension.
I have some suspension rebuild kits for the rear. http://www.vansteel.com Look under suspension kits from the pull down menu. If you want it in poly just call me up and we can do it. You can also add or delete any items you want. I also have mono-springs. Matter of fact I have it on my vette and love it. We also do a rebuilding service for the trailing arms. Check us out and see what we have to offer you. You will also get 5% off for being a CF member.
Dan at Van Steel is the man!! If you have alot of time, you can do it yourself, but keep in mind that you will need some special tools that aren't cheap and you may(probably) will have to go to a shop that can press the outer bearings back on. I like doing everything myself, but to be honest, I almost wish I had sent this out. The customer service at Van Steel has been awesome- they even tracked down some goofy hard to find parts. As stated, I would only attempt this if you have alot of time and tons of patience. (I painted everything and put only the best parts in-so my frustration was probably beyond the normal persons. This is definately a learning experience. Good luck.
Dan, once again thank-you for the great deal and service that you gave on the Bilstein group purchase. Installed them on Sunday, what a difference, no more floating or wheel hop.
Another happy Van Steel customer checking in here. Took my TA's to have them rebuilt only to learn that the TA's were bent. They got them back in to shape, rebuilt and did a beautiful job. TA's are one thing I feel much more comfortable with a professional job.
The fiberglass spring is a great upgrade if you have the $$$. Just remember, you'll need to get new shocks that are matched to the fiberglass spring.
