Hello everyone. New to forum here. i know I'll get some good advice from this group. i have a 78 L82 auto with about 40K on the clock and I'm looking to replace the stock smog heads.
Mods so far:
Headers w/true duals and Dynomax turbo mufflers.
Edelbrock performer intake.
Recurved distributor.
All smog equip removed and stored.
I'm kind of close to pulling the trigger for a set of AFR 180 68cc(I think) heads to replace the stock cast iron 76cc heads.
I have almost decided to leave the L82 cam alone and just go with the heads and maybe do the cam later. Not even sure what cam I'd do if I were to change. Probably a single pattern as the exhaust characteristics of the AFRs are so strong.
Well, what do you guys think? I here the L82 cam is not all that bad and I'm hoping that adding these heads will wake things up a bit more.
BTW, the car runs great right now but I would like more power overall.
Not really sure what to suggest for you, but I can recommend that you take some before & after pictures so that you can post them here and we can all admire your work!

So far everything I've done on this car has turned out pretty well...at a cost of course. These heads are gonna run about 1,300 + shipping...ouch. Am I doing the right thing? Will try to get some pics together. I think you'll like what I've done so far.
Re: 1st Post - need help spending money (Madmikeee)
Thanks for the welcome everyone.
AFR says 40-50 ftlb and 50 hp increase with these heads and springs supplied will be fine with stock cam(120# seat pressure). Is this good information or just a sales pitch?
My wife's cool about spending money on the vette. She just kind of rolls her eyes.
However, I will not buy anything without forum approval. I don't want to do anything stupid with the money :D
Welcome! Need help spending money? Ok, I could use a 200r4
Seriously if you don't have one, it looks to be a wise investment! I have to wait a little while on mine though. In other words I haven't needed help spending money
Hi, since no one answered your question, I'll try my best. W/o knowing which heads you have, 76cc will give you a low compression (unless you have domed pistons). So you have 2 choices, get smaller chamber heads or go with domed pistions to increase your ratio. I ain't a fan of domes but it would be the cheapest way. Another idea would be to get some 64cc cast iron heads from the scrap yards like 492's which won't cost you that much and will let you change your cam at the same time.... cause lets face it, a cam will help you as much if not more than brand new heads.
