I have a 1974 vette.I have been restoring it for last 3 years. It had 454bb.It is now a 496 stroker. My problem now is you can start the car and while it is cold it shifts fine.As you get in it and it starts to get hot,it becomes hard to shift. You either have to force it in the other gear or force it out of gear or both.turn the car off and it will shift into anything just fine.Star it back and you have the same problem over again until it is completly cold again.I have people telling me they know its the clutch and why.I also have some tell me its the tranie and why.I have know clue. Can anyone shed some light here please. thanks Jeff
The first and easiest thing is to check the clutch adjustment to be sure the clutch is fully disengaging the engine from the tranny. I'm not sure why the shifting would change due to temperature though. Let us know if adjusting the clutch doesn't change anything.
I will be getting pics soon.got to figure out how to do all this.have adjusted clutch 3 or 4 times.never seemed to make a differance.the clutch feels tight and seems to release to begin with and has problems later as it get s hot.someone has said it is the synchros in the trannie.thats the only thing that hasnt been check.its only been out 4 times so I guess 5 wouldnt make much differance....thanks.please keep suggesting
It could be the synchro's to test, heat the oil up and drain it..... put a heavier oil in it...... the shifting should stay fairly easy with the thicker oil(it uses the viscosity to compensate for the wear in the synchros).
It it helps... leave it in there..... its a good bandaid until you can get the transmission rebuilt( or upgraded)
