I drove by this and actually stopped and went into the parking lot to take pictures. You just don't see these every day. I really think this one is legit. Spotted in Hagerstown MD.
I'm all about driving them, but that car is worth several thousands of dollars if it is real. I would be setting up velvet museum ropes around that thing.
Great pics! Remember my cousin bought a beater Superbird a long time ago (before they were very valuable) and trashed it. We didnt really know what is was even. Now one of my favorites.
I went to high school with a guy who's dad had a real 70 Superbird and a 69 Daytona. He found them in pretty good shape and did a full resto on both. The bird was identical to this one, and the Daytona was white and red. One had a 440 and one had a 426 Hemi, I don't remember which though. Super cool cars, but for the money I'll take a nice vette :).
Motorhead,
It's funny you should say that. I have a neighbor buddy who's a Mopar nut- he has 3 Chargers & a Coronet R/T. After I bought my WRX he was laughing at me, implying that the rear spoiler was "rice" because it was so big. I reminded him that Mopar must be the "Daddy of Rice" since they gave birth to the huge spoilers on the Superbirds & Daytonas over 30 years ago. This conversation took place in front of a group of car nuts, & believe me, the laughter swung in the other direction in a hurry. He was speechless & hasn't brought it up since. ;)
I'm a hard-core Chevy/anti-rice guy, but those 'winged-wonders' Mopar built are definitely NOT rice! God, they look SO outta-place in a parking lot; they SHOULD be going three-wide around Daytona or Talladega. 20+ years ago, my brother had a wicked 440 R/T Charger; he sold the car (for the drive-train) to a dude w/ a Daytona Charger. I woulda liked seeing where the motor/tranny ended-up going.....
Great pics...looks like a good find to me. The color looks right as do the decals. Appears to be original paint...hard to believe, but whoever did the restore if it's new paint did a wonderful job from the pics.
When I was elementary and middle school there was a guy in our town that had a red/orange one. I didn't know much about cars but I knew that was not your ordinary car and loved to see it when every it drove by.
Hey, is that the Denny's in Hagerstown? Can't believe the guy just parked it out in the lot! And remember, those original huge wings were highly functional. MJ

Re: (79VetteMike)
Tire clearance.
That's the very short answer, but it's correct.
When racing at Daytona the front of the cars had so much downforce that the top of the tires would rub on underside of the top of the fenders. The cars would literally push down about 6-8 inches on the front end and the tires would rub and smoke going down the straights. The fix was to cut a hole in the top of the fender so the tire could move another 1-2 inches higher and then they put a scoop over the fender to cover the hole.
Many believe the scoop was there to pull air out from under the fender to make the car sit lower by means of vacuum.
