Clutch Problem.... I have a 1969 427 4speed that has a noise when driven that sounds like a very low squeel that can be stopped instantly if I slightly depress the clutch just a little... could it be the throwout bearing going bad?
Other than the noise the car shifts relatively well.... any thoughts???
The throwout bearing usually would sit idle when the clutch is not being pushed. So if the bearing is gonna make noise, it would usually do it when the clutch is pushed. Not the other way as you describe. Maybe if the adjustment was too tight, then the throwout bearing could be riding on the tines of the pressure plate even when the pedal is not ingaged. then it might make a noise untill the pedal is depressed. Make sure you have a little play in the clutch linkage. It should have a slight bit of slop when the pedal is up. If the fork feels tight with the pedal fully released, you might wanna loosen it up a tad.
BTW, i was thinking about yur problem some more when i realized this; as the clutch disc wears and becomes thinner the pressure plate moves closer to the flywheel. As this happens the tines on the pressure plate move closer to the throwout bearing. So as i said before, the tines may just barely be touching the bearing while the pedal is in the realeased position. So loosening the adjustment a tad might allow the bearing to rest idle while the pedel is in the released position. So an adjustment might cure the noise for now, but it could be an indication of a worn clutch disc.
