Default Cooling problems.....

Hi,

She's running too hot...

I'm running a completly stock system except for the fan shroud ( I cut some of it away to help get it in and out easier)

I've messed around with the thermo, even tried taking it out completly didn't make a diffrence.

While i'm in motion it sticks around 200, but as soon as I stop for a light it starts creeping up.

I guess my question is should I spend the $150 or so and get a full shroud, or should I just go the electric fan route?

Engine wise i'm running the complete performer series with headman headers.

Thanks for any help

Mike

Hey Mike! Welcome to the forum! :seeya In case you don't already know, we like pics, so get some up for us to look at. :D

There's been a couple of threads around here lately dealing with cooling problems. Like this one, http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=588495 . I would try using the "search" feature http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerosearch to see what comes up. If your system is completely stock maybe your radiator is clogged up. I know mine is a little clogged and I'm running around 220 on just warm days not sitting in traffic  .

Good luck.
Matt

Have you checked your fan clutch? With the engine hot and turned off, the fan should have a lot of resistance if you try to turn it by hand.

The second thing might be that your water pump either has a belt loose or is wearing out. Maybe the impeller is worn or corroded. The installation of my high flow waterpump dropped my temps 30-40 degrees.

Also, if you haven't replaced your radiator cap in a while, you might want to for good measure, or have it pressure tested. If the system can't build pressure, it might be letting coolant out to the expansion tank, drecreasing the amount of coolant in the radiator and engine.

If none of this works, you might need that shroud. Did you have the current mods before youd cut the shroud? (I'm guessing the mods were the reason for having to cut the shroud, specifically camshaft intallation.) If the mods were there before you cut the shroud and it didn't run hot, then you can be fair;u certain that the shroud is the problem.

Check and see if your radiator to support seals are there and if so in good shape, do you have a front spoiler? needed to direct air up to the radiator.
Check between your condenser & radiator for debris that can empede air flow. Is your thermostat operating properly? try running a 180 degree. Also try some Waterwetter or something like it. As stated above, check your fan clutch and radiator for good flow, both air & coolant. Timing can cause your engine to run hot. For what it's worth, Bob

In addtion to the above suggestions, I'd say....
1- for sure flush the system well.
2-replace your lower hose and spring
3-definetly replace the t-stat with a new 180.

For long term, I'm very happy with my mods. All new aluminum rad with Spal fans, Edelbrock water pump. At cruise I can watch the temp gauge blip between 180 and about 185 as the t-stat is constantly opening and closing. The system wants to run cooler than the t-stat allows it. Stop light driving it creeps to 195 and then the fans kick on, cooling it to 185.

Wow,

Thanks for all of the advice, from reading all of your posts I think my problem is probably the fan shroud.

I had my radiator recored 3 seasons ago
New fan clutch 2 seasons ago
New water pump last season.
Thermo wise has seen 180 - 160 - and 0 when I got frustrated

Temp wise running steady at 50 will sit at around 200
Stop for a light or 2 its up to 230
Stop for 3 lights and the needle is crusing twords the red

She has always run a bit hot, but your right I cut the shroud back for easier removal while I put the mods in.

I'll have to take some new pictures soon and post them, shes in the shop right now getting a bit of rear end work done 3:08 to a 3:70 :)

Thanks again for all of the help,

Mike
