I installed a new Powermaster Hi-Torque mini starter in my 350. I also installed a remote solenoid from Summit. The car starts great initially, but after driving a while and shutting it down upon re-start it screeches like hell. Like the pinion gear is screeching on the ring gear and chewing it up. This ONLY happens when the engine is hot. When everything is cold, it starts beautifully. I am stumped.

Re: New Mini Starter...Weird problem. (Stewart's74)
:nono: Try it without that remote solenoid. Recommend heat shield only but that mini-stater may be just fine by itself. :yesnod:
We kind'a beat this remote solenoid idea to death a couple weeks ago. But you can be the judge here. Do a search on my recent posts. Good luck Stew. :seeya

 Okay. Okay. Here's the post I was talking about. Re: I feel stupid even asking ... WHat is this? (djlangford) . Sorry, just got a little lazy.
Now the trouble you have difinitely seems a result of tempurature/heat. Whether the result of metals/materials expanding at different rates or the soleniod moving slower than the stater motor armature when both are energized we're all quessing. Maybe result of both but the heat may slow solenoid action down to where the starter gear can't engage before armature turns? That gear driven starter shaft may be at the advange here.
Just my two cents but I think a good heat shield is the best fix here. I bought the polished SS shield from summit and like it because its shiney side should reflect a lot of heat away from solenoid. I do need to trim it for the battery cable though - and a little bendng too.
Please let us now what works for you. :seeya
Stewart, I have the same setup as you, although I have a GM mini starter instead of a Powermaster. My solenoid is mounted back in my jack well. I haven't had any sort of problems at all with it, and I do run headers. You might want to give Powermaster a call and see what they say.
