Hello,
Just got my Felpro intake gasket set, and the directions that came with it don't mention using any sealant on the top part of the gasket. The directions however don't appear to be thought out very well, as there are multiple typographical errors, so it is quite possible they just left that step out.
So should I put RTV on the top of the gasket? Any additional tips for installing it? Last time it was leaking oil, so I'm having to re-do it.
I used a thin bead of RTV around the water jacket ports on both sides of the gasket and the front and rear rails of the lifter valley and pitched the cork. I used the GM brand teflon sealer for the bolts instead of RTV.
Which gaskets did you get? 1206/1256? If so, then you don't need sealer on the top side of the gasket. If you're gasket matching to the head, then smear a small amount around the ports to hold it in place. Let it dry and then carefully trim the gasket. RTV on the front and rear (don't use the cork) and you're good to go.
Hmm maybe I got the wrong one then
The box says MS 90314-2
Both of the side gaskets say 90314-1
Don't worry just yet.
What are you running for head & intake? Stock cast iron heads & intake? In that case you're fine. That's a stock replacement gasket. What's that gasket made out of? Metal or some cardboardy stuff, or a foamy plasticy stuff?
If you're running an aluminum intake, I think it'd be best to go with whichever gasket I mentioned is appropriate. (1206/1256, One of them has a slightly larger port size than the other but I can never remember which)
I have an aluminum Edelbrock Performer intake, and the stock heads. The gasket I got is a blue metal. Should I return this gasket and get a different one?
The instructions for the Edelbrock 2101 that I'm reading (I keep all that crap) says specifically not to use "Fel-Pro Permatorque (blue) gaskets" It doesn't list a part number or anything though. It says to either use the Edelbrock 7201 (obviously they recommend their own stuff), the Fel-Pro 1256 Printoseal, or OEM equivalent. It also says eliminate the end seals that came in your kit and use RTV as was mentioned above.
Also make sure to use some Teflon treadsealer on all the intake bolts.
I used a Mr Gasket Ultraseal embossed intake gasket. I only used a small dab of RTV on the underside of the gasket to hold in in place on the head while I was installing the manifold.
I use High-tack sealent on the side going to the heads. Put them in place and snug the intake down. remove the intake and check the position, then put the intake back on and torque it down. Retorque the bolts aleat 3 times after the engine has been run because of the aluminum. don't foget to use sealent on the bolts.
