How do you fix a dancing tach on a 76, it only dances around under a bit of acceleration, not all the time. Ive been told the cable has the 90 degree turn in it and grease it or get a new one, or get a 90 degree adapter. I have also been told that on the 76 they had some sort of printed circut that is the main problem w/ them. Which is most likley liable for this, and how do i fix it.
pillowmeto- In '76 all Corvette tachs were electronic. (no cable)You might get lucky and re-flow the solder connections on the circuit card. Last tach ('77) I repaired I had to replace the movement. The tach & the "Low fuel warning "lite circuits were one of GM's weak design.
Good Luck,
Dan
I have also determined that my circuit board is fried and had a local electronics shop replace a few diodes that where fried, however there must be more wrong because it still does not work :mad I found Ecklers is selling them for $60 does anyone know the discount number? Here is the url to the part http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...6DH3FQP0AMFUV0
And here is a picture of my temporary solution (Bubba fix) you may find funny or sad
Those tach were designed to jump around to signal a possible problem with the ignition system. Before you go tearing into the tach thinking its wrong, check out all the tune up stuff like plugs, cap and wires. Also check for the presence and condition of the engine ground strap.
Ill try that last one first and check everything else, knowing how my previous owner did things, or the cheap shops he hired did, its probobly the tuneup stuff, well id say its the circurit, butill check anyways, would setting my timing do anything, just asking cause that is tune up related to ignition, and im gonna have it done this week.
Jeemeny xmas guys, I can't beleive the amount of responses and no one hit the most likely cause yet....i'ts the tach 'filter' that black 1/2 inch dia 1.5 inch long cylinder clipped tothe engine somewhere near the dist. and has a wire from each end....that is in series with the Tach wire...white...NOW if it's missing or defective the tach jumps all over the place....it's no longer made either...you maybe able to find one in a junkyard...maybe not....
you can make one, according to a schematic and some Radio shack parts...
search this site for that information....I know someone posted it...

The last 3 C3's I've owned with intermittent Tach movement was caused either from the circuit card or the needle coil. I've removed tach filters (you won't miss it) many times and was never that lucky. The fix is usually the circuit card. I've tried flowing solder over the riveted connectors and fix one out of the 3. You will find that most of the tach failures happen after you have driven for a while and heat from the engine causes the poor connections to intermittently go open or create inductive reactance within the circuit.
