I've got the interior apart on my 71 to insulate the floor and firewall. I pulled the heater core out (I have A/C) and was wondering if there is supposed to be a seal between the heater box and the firewall? Is there supposed to be a seal in the channel where the heater tubes go down to connect to the hoses - this seems like an area where air comes in and flows over the heater core and into the car.

Re: Heater Core Seals? (OakVette)
 It's been almost two years but I recall using spongy foam seals on the box - on my '74. I think I used the spray 3M interior adhesive to fix to heater box and kept'm in place while instaling the box.
Yes there needs to be a barrier seal where the tubes exit the box on the engine side of the firewall. It was a thicker foam piece that slid over heater core tubes. And a leak here will add hot engine compartment air (fumes) to your ventilated (A/C) air.
Just to add my experience, my people compartment was hot, very hot and discovered my heater box was missing nearly all its seals. This mixed all the hot air with the ventilation air. Also had plenty other leaks through firewall - look for these at night with light on opposite side of firewall. Worst heat source was the ripped open rubber shift boot hiding under a normal looking leather shift boot. :yesnod:
You can get a complete heater box reseal kit from Dr. Rebuild. It's worth the money because everything is die cut and fits right. There are also sponge seals that go around the heater pipes included in the kit.
