The BB is in!
Hey people, last friday my dad and I dropped the 396 into the vette and all in all it went great. The new pan fits fine, and the headers come very very close but don't hit anything (after we did some 'adjusting'). We're in the process now of fabbing up PS brackets and doing the hookups.
With no A/C box in the way, we were able to put the passenger side header in from the top after the engine was already in... we would barely be able to get a .010 feeler gauge in between it and the frame though, and we had to grind off the end of a bolt first.
The drivers side header was hard against the steering box at first, so we had to shim up the engine mount on that side with some washers (and longer bolts of course) and we ended up with plenty of room.
I'm stoked, and we might even get to fire it up tomorrow (we'll see).
You know what I'll be thinking about the whole time we're in Seattle watching the SOVREN racers!:chevy

Looks good. Great work. What size are those header tubes?
Are you sure you have the valve covers on the correct side?

BB73Chris,
Nice job! Looks like things are going smooth for you thus far on the installation. What rearend gear ratio are you running?

Nevermind. But the breather holes look a little low to me.

Breathers can go on whatever side you want. I run two breathers.

Hey, that look awesome. You have a really pretty big block and it looks great in the car. Driving it is going to be a blast. I love new engines.

Re: The BB is in! (1970 Stingray)
Thanks everybody! I'm very excited. I just had to hear it run so we poured just a little bit of gas down the carburator, put the air cleaner on and cranked it and it roared to life just long enough to put ear to ear grins on both my dad and I and then it was out. You don't need me to tell you, but that's like hearing a baby cry the first time.
The header primaries are 2", and the collectors are 3", and they're Hedmans.
As far as the valve covers go, I don't think there's another way they could go on. I could swap them one head to the other, but I'd have the same thing when I'm done, and I can't turn them around on the heads because it's a one way bolt pattern.
Thanks again for the encouragement, and for all the questions answered either from my questions or others that I've read.
The forum rocks!

Thanks Bob! I believe I have a 3.55:1 rear end (If I remember right, it indicates 3200rpm and 70mph... when the tach worked).
