HELP - tach not working.....please tell me what to check before I tear the whole thing apart. It doesn't work at all (shows 0 rpm when running) and jumps to 15-20 when engine goes off.
first check to see if its pluged in to distributor cap ,then check if tach filter is okay , if all that checks out you will have to get behind the dash .mid america book page 3-126 has rebuild kits for $99.99
Hi Terry - there is a connection to the distributor, and then there is a connector hanging off that (hmmmmm), is that the "filter" that should be connected there and what does the filter do?
theres a wire coming from the distributer to the filter [ it looks like a old condenser] then it goes to the circuit board in the back of the dash . the filter is suppose to keep the tach needle from jumping around alot sort of smooth it out.the tach will work with out it.the circuit board seems to be the thing that goes out the most . theres a replacement for that but i dont see any filter replacements.

There is a spare connector on the wiring harness to plug in a hand held tach. This is helpful for mechanics doing tune-ups when setting idle and timing. Also a good place to wire in a tach to verify how accurate the dash tach really isn't.
