I am currently looking at a 1969 350/350 4-spd vert. It belongs to a friend of mine and is willing to deal a little. The car is black with the white convertible top and a black hardtop. The engine is rebuilt as well. Everything is good on the car except the carpet is getting a little worn.
He is not a Corvette guy at all. In fact, the car is stored in an airplane hangar and only has a couple hundred miles on the rebuild. What he doesn't know is if the car is a "numbers matching" car. Frankly, when it comes to C3's, I'm clueless too as to what to look for.
What would be the going price of a car like this either numbers matching or not? I've been in it and it is a nice car regardless. What do I need to look out for as a trouble area on these cars?
Re: C4 Owner Thinking About C3 Purchase (KF9WM's 87 coupe)
Rust on the frame just in front of the rear wheels (This is common) and above the wheels around the shock mounts.. Rusty trailing arms, windshield frame at the top and bottom corners. This is a little more involved.. check the side yoke in the diff for end play. Excessive rear wheel camber and or bent strut rods are an indication of this. There should be almost none. The fix is more than you might think. Leaking brakes or spongy pedal are also a concern if it has not been fitted with stainless steel brakes. Not as big of a problem as rusty frames though.
Re: C4 Owner Thinking About C3 Purchase (KF9WM's 87 coupe)
Some C3's had problems rusting on the "birdcage" (the area around the windshield mostly). Brakes generally stink on C3 vettes so you may want to keep that in mind. As for value or cost the one you are describing if not numbers matching might be in the mid teens if it is numbers matching it could be well into the 20K range. Hard to pin a good price down with out knowing all the ins and outs of the car. Nonethelss a chrome bumper C3 vert is a good investment and will gain value!
