Default Newbie starting first tear down

I have an L48 auto coupe with a bad camshaft. I have bought a comp cams 268H EX replacment camshaft, lifters, pushrods & new bolts so far. The block has been decked and bored 30 over (previous owner), the engine is original in appearence but the numbers have gone with the decking process. It alraedy has an Edelbrock performer intake, but retains stock exhaust manifolds & Rochester carb & HEI.
I was thinking of going to a Mallory replacement HEI & wires, and I see that Holley has a Quadrajet replacement carburetor. Nothing too extreme I know, future mods would be in the direction of new heads & headers. This will be a pleasure use only vehicle and will be a classic next year.
Anyway, while I have the engine partially disassembled is there anything you guys recommend I do now, to save time/money later? How about switching to electric fans? Upgrade fuel pump etc. Cheers Andy.

If the motor is out, go ahead and have the pistons replaced with flat tops. Spending money on heads and headers is always a good idea, but pricey. If you raise compression it will wake the motor up and match up to the cam. Don't waste the money on the Holley spread bore. The Q-Jet will work fine, just dyno it and install the right fuel meter rods. Save your money for Fuel Injection.

Oh yea, Welcome. :seeya

My 1st ever top end only tear down taught me to: Use good NEW parts. Throw out the old head bolts, etc. Use HD Head gaskets instead of "Aluminum Foil" ones. Further, it is impossible to use too much gasket sealer when sealing front and rear of intake manifold. Torque to specs in steps......Yeah, You guessed it, I had to do mine twice..... . GOOD LUCK! It sounds like you are on the right track with you combination..... :D
