I have been having trouble with my clutch pedal lately were the g-clip is supposed to be the previous owner replaced it with a radiator clamp. Anyway I was backing my car out of the driveway straight back into the driveway of the house across the street and the clutch linkage came undone. The drive way is on a pretty steep hill so when I get the linkage back together, I tried to move the car and it wouldn’t budge. Something in the actual shifter is messed up; I got under the car and moved the shifting rods around until I got a forward gear. But I was hoping someone here might have had the same problem and can tell me where to start, under the car or is it a problem in the console? Any advice would be great!
What do you mean by "g-clip"? Are you saying the pedal won't actuate the clutch? I would first fix my clutch linkage. If it were me I would start from the bellhousing and work my way to the firewall and into the upper part of the dash. I would disconnect all linkage springs and make sure the clutch fork is operating properly. Then as you work through the linkage, you should find the problem. If the clutch linkage is working OK then it is either your tranny or your shifter. Sometimes the linkage just gets stuck in two gears. That happened to me and my shifter was in dire need of a rebuild. It is very easy to rebuild the shifter but not so easy to get it out of the car. There have been many posts on removing the shifer on this forum. Basically, you will want to remove the left side exhaust pipe and remove the shifter console. There is one long bolt you remove from the console area and a shorter bolt you remove from underneath. You may need to wiggle it but it comes out (I took mine out from the bottom of the car). If it is the tranny, the tranny will have to come out and the side cover removed to inspect. Also, before you remove the side cover you could use a wrench on the shift forks to try and shift it on the bench as you are spinning the input shaft. The tranny may be stuck in reverse. Good luck.
The G-clip is the clip that holds the rod that runs through the firewall to the clutch pedal, it was slipping off but I fixed that temporarily until I can get a replacement G-clip. I was able to get under the car and get it in a forward gear, so I guess the problem is in the shifter. The car does not have many miles and the shifter has always been tight so I was hoping it might be an easy fix.
So were you able to move the car? The tranny could still be stuck in reverse if the car won't move. You might try unscrewing the **** on the shifter and removing the reverse lock-out rod. If it shifts OK with that removed then you have narrowed the problem.
You probably had two gears engaged after fixing the linkage. I had a heck of a time getting the shifter and tranny synced up after doing that. I think I unhooked all the linkage and made sure the shifter was in neutral and then did the same with the tranny then hooked the linkage back up. I think I had to manually push some of the shifter parts to get them to slide into the neutral postition. Hope this helps.
I finally got it fixed; I got under the car and reset everything to neutral and the shifter works fine now. There was one bolt that was kind of loose but I still don’t see how that caused such a problem. Hopefully it won’t happen again. Thanks for the all the good advice. :yesnod:
