are Weiand intakes any good?
I'm looking at a Weiand X-Celarator series intake for my vette and am wondering about hood clearance and performance with a q-jet on top
I have a Weiand Stealth intake and a holley 750 with no clearance problems. As for performance, its the only intake I've had on my engine so its hard to say if its better or worse than anthing else out there.
I've got a Weiand Action Plus Dual Plane w/Q-Jet atop my '76 350. I did shorten the carb stud to bare minimum just to be safe, and have no problems. It uses a 3" drop base air cleaner............
I ran a Weiand X-celerator intake on a 350 I had in my 68 Camaro.
Nice intake but with it being a single plane design the low end on it was not that great but it had a nice mid to high end. For a street application I have always had better luck with high rise dual plane design intakes like the Weiand Stealth or Elderbrock RPM series of intake manifolds. Wieand does make a good quality product I guess it all depends on what the main use will be. Hood clearance will be an issue.
Weiand X-Celarator - I used one for about 10 years with a stock 79 hood and a 1/2 wood thermal carb spacer with a 3 X 14 open K&N element using a dropped base air cleaner.
It's been so long since I owned a dual plane intake that I can't comment on the loss of torq at idle.
And less expensive than Ed******k parts, too. Why? Because, with Weiand you're not paying for a whole bunch of HYPE manifest in full-page, 4-color advertisements in every damn magazine out there.
I'm almost surprised Ed******k doesn't have a recurring hypejob on its "new technology" Air Gap manifolds in Martha Stewart Living, for crying out loud.
I've had both the Weiand Exccelerator and a RPM clone on my mildly warmed smallblock and can say the dual plane feels better all around and seems to have better fuel distribution from the looks of the plugs....
wow good to know.. ok .. question.. what is comparable to a eddelbrock rpm air gap that a weiand makes? I would love to know cuz if I don't do my engine swap I am buffing this one out big time :)
Since Holley bought out the Weiand brand they have really let that brand name slip. The X-CELerator line has not had there runner shape updated in over 15 years and are really falling behind to the compitition. From first hand expeirence on the dyno a Weiand manifold would not be my first choice if you want more than just looks.
