Default Frame work???`s

Hi , i just purchased a 1978 anniversary edition. After a close inspection i see that the frame in the front of the vehicle is rotted through pretty bad. I do know how to weld so i dont mind to do the work, i just wanted to know if anyone here experienced this problem and the steps taken to weld this frame back to or even stronger normal. TIA.

Considering it is a 78 and all, i would just find a different frame. Frames for rubber bumper sharks are relatively cheap. $500 should find you what you need. Frames can be welded, but a different, solid frame would be the preferable repair. I have welded rubber bumper front frame sections onto chrome bumper rears to take care of a rust problem before, but that's because a chrome bumper frame is a whole different deal than a rubber bumper as far a cost goes. BTW, I have welded up 4 frames and done 2 frame off's and 1 frame switch, so I've played this game before. If you have frame rot you should also look at your windshield frame, floor pans, door hinge pillars, trailing arms, etc. to check for any other rust.

The floors , windshield frame, doors and trailing arms have eigther been changed or do not need to be because they are in good condition. It looks like the passenger side is only affected by about an 8" inch section. The drives side is good , i hit it with a hammer and screwdrive to see if it would go through and it was solid. How would i go about replacing that section? How thick a slab of steel schould i use? it seems reletively easy, i just wabt to be safe.

Hey Dave,
You can buy the correct frame pieces and section them in. I know Corvette America has them listed in their catalogue, probably other vendors as well. And they are pretty reasonable.
Good luck, Greg
