well i finally bit the bullet and entered my '79 into the annual car show here. the car is very clean however i need some engine detailing tips if anyone has some- theres not much build up on anything, i keep it pretty clean so i just need some advice on how to clean around the engine bay and some finishing touches on the engine. thanks for any help! :smash:
Re: help! need some engine detailing tips! (Yellow79)
I used tire dressing to clean up the hoses and radiator shroud also replaced the worn hoses. You can re-wrap the wire harnesses with electrical tape. I painted the alternator, all brackets and firewall and fenders. Rustolium semigloss black works great on the fenders and firewall. I also painted the master cylinder and coolant tank. I masked off a vertical strip so I can see the fluid level. :smash: :seeya
Re: help! need some engine detailing tips! (Yellow79)
It all depends on how much detail you want to go through. If your firewall and fenderwells show the years Krylon makes a Jet Black Wrinkle Finish you can apply to them. Prepare to spend alot of time masking things if you go that far. If your radiator hose fittings show age change them. Pull off your aircleaner & valve covers... clean them up & repaint them again. And take the time to pull each ignition wire & clean them. Many enthusiasts like to see a completely original engine bay rather than all of the chrome & braided hoses. And Armourall is great for just about everything to make rubber components & vinyl look great.

when you paint your engine compartment is it even possible to do so without taking the entire engine and all of the other crap out of it? I would love to do this but don't feel like yanking my engine out :skep:

Absolutely! Remember, the stuff the motor hides can't be seen anyway, so why worry about it. Just put a big plastic bag around the motor and remove as much other stuff as you can.
Paint the motor first, then when the paint is good and dry, bag it and paint the rest.
I did a 70 Firebird that way and it came out great.

It is possible, but the time you spend taping up everything and you'll still get overspray on things you could pull the motor and do a bang up job in a weekend
