OK, I'm scared to ask. I've been hearing a knock, sounds like it comes from the rear axle, for a bit...but now it has turned into a knock just a second after I've shifted gears and accelerate. I hear it when I decelerate sometimes too. You with experience...what am I looking at?
Re: Knocks and clunks with gear changes (five-boy-mom)
My '80 doesn't quite pull the same antics to that degree, however I do have a clunk when I go into reverse in the diff area for sure. I also have a slightly less loud clunk when putting the car in drive, but not on shifts or deceleration.
My Mechanic team (my dad and his brother and myself) have a hunch that it is a U-joint coming off of the driveshaft, or one of the halfshafts.. good luck.
Re: Knocks and clunks with gear changes (Hobbes Blk '80)
Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that it doesn't happen all the time. I've just been hearing it for the past two or three days and then only off and on.
Re: Knocks and clunks with gear changes (five-boy-mom)
Get a clean magnet stick and get it to the bottom of the diff. If its covered in filings you will know. Also possible that the play on the yokes are bad. A lot of things it could be. Prolly check the ujoints first.
Re: Knocks and clunks with gear changes (five-boy-mom)
Check all your U-joints, make sure they are all tight and also check the diff. cushion at the front mounting point... If it is worn or slack it will knock, thud or clunk when your drivetrain slackens and returns to tension (like changing gears)...
Re: Knocks and clunks with gear changes (NorthVette)
I love this site! You guys are always so helpful! Thanks!!! ;) Oh, and I forgot to add, sometimes there is a little jingling noise as I cruise along...definitely coming from the underside, not the engine.
