The post Redvetteracer & Mountainmotor made regarding roller pilot bearings was very timely for me. I installed such a roller pilot bearing with my ROD 6 speed. Yesterday when I pulled the motor and tranny I found pieces of roller all over the inside of the hub. Fortunately it doesn't appear to have hurt the input shaft, yet it did mark the tip with some discoloration.
Anyway, I had indexed the bell housing when I installed it and as I recall perfect. The flywheel and pressure plate were also balanced together and marked and installed at the same marking. No vibration was apparent, yet the serious cam lope and loud exhaust does mask many otherwise detectible noises and sensations. The wear pattern on both the flywheel and pressure plate strikes me to be a bit unusual. With only a few thousand miles on them, I don’t understand why all looks new except for about ¼ of the arc which is rather heavily spotted. This area does have a slightly wavy feel to it.
i guess it's back to the bronze bushing.
(watch out for the cheap steel ones
in Lingenfelters book, he said he tried roller thrust bearings(for the cam) and they always fell apart, so he quit using them.
might be a good idea to double check the center.
Chuck it is very hard to tell by a picture ,,, but that looks like friction disc deposits . Can you scrape any of that off with a razor blade scraper ?
