below are the photos of my problem. I took this inspection plate off my '68 4spd, mainly to change the gasket. Now I am at a loss how to fit it back together.
The half moons (shift forks) slide into the carrier races in photo#2, but not sure which way they face. Also, the dowel ends to the half moons fit into the slots on the back side of the inspection plate, but which ones. I had pictures of the teardown, but have deleted off my harddrive.
Now I'm in a bind. Anyone know how to fit this together, or know of a reference. TIA.
I did mine the hard way----with the tranny in the car. :( I found out the hard way that the tranny should be in 2nd gear before removing the side case. Otherwise it's almost impossible to get the forks back in. I think I used a Haynes manual as a reference.
Here's a pic from the above mentioned site:
There's a forum member here by the name of Bob (yes just Bob)from Canada who was istrumental in helping me get the forks & side case back on.
Check the forks for wear and slop in the sliders. The sliders are the parts that engage the syncro's and gear teeth. There should be springs and sissors that lock the forks in gear. They are mounted to the side cover. There are two seals on the outside of the cover you should replace. If you have any slop in the forks mike them up and compare the size to the slots in the sliders. I think I have the spec's on new replacement forks somewhere if you need it. If memory serves me they're 3/8".
