I don't quite understand the angle these folks are taking so I thought I'd run it by you folks. In recent Hot Rod and Chevy High Perf mags, I have stumbled across an intake manifold that claims to 'incorporate 30 years of technical improvements' that domestic intake manifold manuf's have not made to theirs. I think this is specifically targetting the Edelbrock Performer (2101/3701) intake manifold. What the ad doesn't say is how that import intake 'measures' up (not just in perf but also in dimensions) to the other 'Performer' intakes (Performer RPM, Airgap, etc.) which HAVE been introduced more recently and very likely incorporate the improvements. My guess is that the Performer RPM and Airgap manifolds are either comparable or better than the import manifold.
I smell a 'rat'... well, perhaps more a 'skunk' :mad
I'll see what the brand name is. I think it is being marketed through Northern Auto Parts advertisements.
Here's the info from the Northern Auto Parts advertisement for 'Professional Products' line of performance parts. I have no clue how this company 'Professional Products' came into being. Am hopeful somebody can shed some light here.
"Power+Plus Manifolds: Power+Plus is the newest line of performance intake manifolds available. As a result, we have been able to incorporate many new features in our manifolds not found in competitive models. Some of today's most popular manifolds were designed 30 years ago and the makers have never bothered to update the tooling to include many of the new features desired by performance enthusiasts. We engineered those features into our manifolds".
Not sure what 'engineering' they have done. Also, doesn't Weiand offer the 'Action+Plus' manifold? Sounds similar...
From what I can gather, the new features are:
This manifold now includes dual distributor holddowns and four corner water outlets.
I always thought these were pretty much "copies" of the Edelbrock manifolds, ie the same performance at cheaper prices. I've seen a few posts where other members are running these manifolds and are happy with them.
UMM...humm....NOW IF Edel is not doing it themselves, meaning transferring production overseas.....they are being copied, and since i'ts mostly Asia that does those dirty tricks, and there are NO laws against that type stuff....
Edel is now under one hell of a lot of pressure....to afford an ineffective law suit...even IF the win....nothing happens...the imports continue and the governmnt will NOT stop them....
shame, another American industry bites the dust...just you watch, in 5 years....it's over....

Re: "Import" Intake Manifolds (Twin_Turbo)
[Flame on]If it is an import piece, I wouldn't buy one if it was $5. I hate the fact that I work hard for my money and have to buy cheap Chinese/Taiwanese sheet. Try buying door ***** or lighting for your house and see what I mean. It burns my butt. :mad [Flame off]
I bought a budget damper (harmonic balancer) from Northern Auto Parts. I think it was a 'Proform' brand. The thread on one of the three threaded holes used to attach the crank pulley stripped out recently when I removed the pulley to install a 6.75" Proform timing cover (with those fancy white timing marks). So, I have the crank bolt/washer and two of the three bolts securing the pulley. The third has blue locktite and prayers holding it in place until I can drop cash for a good namebrand item; my first choice will be OEM (GM) or Streetdamper. No more knock-off parts unless there is simply no other option. As for intake manifolds and such, I'll go with Edelbrock as my first option followed by Holley, Weiand or GM OEM.
I have used quite a few of the single plane version on the entry level race motors. They are not an exact copy of a Victor Jr. It is somewhat a cross between a Victor Jr. and a Chevy Bowtie. The are consistently down about 3% in power and torque from a Victor Jr. which puts them above the Wiand and the Holley Strip Dominator. For the money they are worth it. If you what those last few horses then go to a Victor Jr. or Dart.
HMM.. IT's time to say REAL MCOY!!! Somewhat off the subject, But didn't Holley recently buy a private intake manufacturing company. one that specalizes in race manifolds. I believe this is where they got their EFI manifolds along with their ram style on thats oh so popular lately.
Could that private intake manufacturer purchased by Holley be Weiand? That 'Performer+Plus' brand name sounds mysteriously like the 'Action+Plus' manifold from Weiand's 'Team G'....

Hrm, Proform you say? I just picked up a new HEI distributor from GM and it is in a Proform container. Should I be taking it back and asking why the heck they sold me a cheap knockoff as a replacement? I thought $140 was a little inexpensive, but thought it wasn't in my best interest to say so at the time

Yep, they purchased Cutler a while back, that's where their EFI line came from.
