I finally got around to installing the Crane XR-i purchased for the wifes 1973.
it is very easy to install if you remove the distributor. All you do it take out the old points and screw in the XR-i. The XR-i reads the lobes on the existing distributor shaft... no shutter wheel was needed.
There are two wires, one goes to the coil negative and the other went to an IGN terminal on the fuse box.
The idle smoothed out - and noticeable so. I was able to drop the idle about 250 rpm. I can't say there was any SOTP WOT performance increase; but that's not why I wanted to convert over the stock points setup anyways.
I purchased the Crane from Jegs for $64 + shipping.
Thanks for the post Mike. That's about the same results I had when I installed the Pertronix unit in my car. It's nice to know that there are alternatives to the Pertronix if I need one. Have you tried bumping against the rev limiter yet. :D
Did mine last month, and your right, Its a lot eaiser with the distributor out. I on the other hand, did it with the distributor in, Took a while longer, but with same results. Im happy with the outcome.
