To get your total timing advance you want to remove your vacuum advance while checking your timing. With the vacuum advance removed you want to tach the motor to 3000RPMs. While pointing the timing light at the balancer turn your distributor counter-clockwise (advancing it). Do this until you get your desired reading (if you are running a small block you should shoot for 34-36 degrees total). Now tach the motor up to 3500RPMs to insure that you aren't getting any more advance. Clamp down your distributor and you are done. This should all be done with the vacuum advance line removed.

Why would you want more than 38 degrees? Small blocks like 34-36 best.

If you're not getting any vacuum advance much above idle rpm, the canister is probably bad. Unless you already know that your distributor has been curved to provide total mechanical advance at a lower rpm, be sure to rev the engine up to about 5,000 rpm to make sure that it's all in. Unless you know that it's through advancing, any readings you get will be meaningless. I'd start with 36º total with vacuum disconnected and go from there. With a 16º vacuum can, you should then have 52º total with vacuum connected and working.

For better fuel economy and cooler operating temps. True for all out power you want it to be from 34 to 38, all eng vary a little, but for best fuel economy at cruise you want about 50 to 52 deg total adv. The vac can works off vac sinal adn when you drop the hammer it loses vac signal and the can gives no vac adv dropping you back to your int and mech adv timing. For drag stip runs it is probably best to unhooked the vac can but for everyday driving having the vac adv hooked up is not goingt o affect performance much. I do notice a little lag when punching it with the vac can hooked up but it is well worth the cooling operating temps and better fuel economy.
