Default Silicone brake fluid

Where is the best place to buy silicone brake fluid?I bought small cans at Advance Auto. Some would hurt the paint and some of it would not and they turned out to be different colors. The one that would hurt the paint was the color of regular fluid, the other was purple.Would it hurt to mix the two?

DO NOT MIX THEM!!!! The "purple" stuff is the silicon and the "yellowish" is the DOT3 stuff. DOT3 will eat paint. DOT5 (silicon) will not.

:iagree: Do not mix them. The main reason for going with DOT 5 is that it does not absorb water like DOT 4 and 3. I am going to have to change the brake fluid in my car since the body shop added DOT 4 to my brakes, which have DOT 5, when they replaced the trailing arm. I found that DOT 5 works alot better than the older fluids, and since it does not absorb water the car can sit longer without wondering if the brakes will rust out on you.

While silicon does not absorb water it allows water to collect and form drops in the line. Is that a good thing? Silicon is also more spongy. I use it only because of the paint and nothing else.
Once again I hear ford makes the best brake fluid.

Been using DOT 5 for years !! No problems but you have to make sure you have all the other completely out. Never had a spongy problem either! Just GOOD braking power!! :yesnod:

NAPA should have larger bottles!! Maybe Carquest!!

sounds like the cans are mislabeled. dot 5 silicone won't hurt paint and is purple. if my memory is correct (not likely) dot 4 is like silicone but compatable with dot 3, and eats paint. joe

All brake fluids are compatible due to federal law. It is just that by mixing the different brake fluids you lose the advantages one has over the other. When you mix silicone with dot 3 or 4 you lose the high temp capabilities and also the ability to not absorb water.

What break fluid has the best High temp capabilities? Would it be the DOT 5?
