I'm installing Flex-a-lite 210 fans with the adjustable themostat in my 81. I've got everything hooked up except for the wire that is +12v when the ignition is on. The only wire that I got in the kit is pretty heavy guage wire, is this the correct wire for this connection? Does anyone know of a spot in the engine compartment where I can hook this up?
Just to make this clear, yur asking where to hook the wire to power the relay correct? Not the wire to power the fans? Anyway the fans should be powered(fattest wire) by a direct battery source like the bat wire connection on the back of the alt. I found when wiring my fans a good place to splice into for the power to the relay is the windshield wiper circut. You can slpice into the yellow wire just before it connects to the wiper motor just behind the dist. this wire is hot not only when the key is on, but also hot when the key is in the acc. position. connected like this you can run the fans with the key in the acc position and engine not running. I found this handy when cooling down in the staging lanes at the dragstrip.
The horn relay is where you should be getting your power from.
This is where the alt senses voltage so the alt will respond best if you connect you power there.
If you connect further down the line there will be a voltage drop that the alt cannot sense and you will loose a few volts...

ok debate: if our alternators have an internal regulator, then wouldnt the regulator react to the voltage drop caused by a source connected to the back of it? The way I see it, electricity travels at the speed of light, and therefore it makes no difference where in the sys you connect. Its gonna put the same draw on the sys at the same time basically. Makes no difference in terms of draw whether you connect the fan motors power source to the bat connection on the alt., which runs directly to the positive battery post, or to the battery post itself. Matter a fact its better to keep the power feed to the fan as short as possible which would limit the amperage lost due to excess wire length. The bat. connection at the alt. is about as close as you can get to the fans with a source capable of delivering high amperage. I dont know, am I missing something?

This is exactly the way I wired my fans. Red from the Alt and yellow to the wiper motor.
