Lower radiator house popped off in the parking lot of Giant eagle. Rather embarrassing when your cool red Corvette throws up all over the place. :U This is the second time this has happened , fortunately the first time was in my driveway. That time the clamp failed. This time it just slipped off the water pump. It's a chrome pump which I'm thinking may be the reason...to smooth or it could be that when I put the hose back on the first time the edge was real gummy so I cut off about an inch but it still seemed to fit OK. Did this make it too short? Or is it that the hose just needs replaced even though it seems OK. I ordered a new hose but want to make sure it doesn't happen again so I'm looking for your opinions.
Thanks for your advice
I always put a light coat of RTV on the inside of the hose for a guaranteed
seal and after it hardens - the hose won't slip off. If you do this - wait
overnight, as the uncured RTV can be slippery and cause the hose to slide off.
Had a chrome water pump in my camaro that did that. I took it back off and cleaned the chrome off the neck with a grinder. Never had the problem after that. just be sure to mark about where you want your clamp to go, then remove some of the chrome.
Thanks, I thought maybe the fact that it was chrome was part of the problem. I will take off some of the chrome or at least rough it up a bit before I put on the new hose and I may try a little RTV as well.
Thanks for the responses
I wonder if your radiator cap might be defective. You wouldn't think enough pressure would build up in there to force a hose off if the cap is venting properly.
