Default Too Tight Pinion?

My driveline had some slack of some kind that could be felt when getting on/off the throttle. My mech found a loose pinion gear and tightened. Now the car has a vibration/thrumming sound. Does the pinion need to be backed off? Is it something else? Any ideas out there? I need help now! TIA

Any idea just how he tightened it? If you just jumped on it he could have crushed the sleeve more thus loading the bearings. You'll hear that if too tight and might wreck them. The pinion nut id tightened to in/lb torque specs. THese vary for new or used bearings. In your case used which would need about 6-8 in/lbs of torque to move the pinion. This is also usually set with the ring gear out so now you have drag from the ring gear too. What you can try is to back it off a little but if it's that loose you need some loctite on the threads to hold it. Check the procedure for replacing the pinion seal in a GM manual for more info. It's worth a try before dropping the differential to do it right.
Good luck,
Gary
