Default Off topic (stereo) question.

I know it's off topic but the audio section is all C5,C4 stuff. What kind of speakers are you guys using in the front? Stock 68-69's have 4X10's in the kick panels instead of the dash. There are no 4X10's (or decent 4X6's) thin enough to fit. I have a corvette specific Kenwood 50W and some nice rear speakers and they sound pretty good but the fronts just plain suck. I'm not looking for a top end system, just something I can listen to without tons on distortion.

I have JL Audio 4"X6" in the dash of my '79. I looked all over until I found a set that I liked. I paid about $120 for them. I compared to all others and these were the best I could find. The dash isn't designed to support the power that these speakers can put out, so some custom work will have to be done. All 4"X6" speakers are designed differently and most of them will not fit in the hole in the dash.

I have Boston Acoustics plates. They drop right in to the holes, and they sounded good with a ~10 year old alpine. I haven't heard them on my new Sony deck yet.

I've got 5 1/4's Eclipses in the kickpanels and 4x6 Eclipses in the dash. I've also got some three ways in the back along with a pioneer bass tube. I've got a 76 and the bass response is GREAT cause its like a fiberglass enclosure behind the seats!!  :steering:

Thanks for the replies... My dash doesn't have speaker holes so I cannot mount speakers there.. My front speakers are in the KICK panels . The area is very shallow. Virtually every 4X10 or 4X6 except the cheapies are thick. That's my problem.

The space I need is behind the kick panel. I don't have an opening in the kick panel, just a lot of little holes.

I installed 4x6 plate speakers in my 69 IN THE KICK PANELS--a little tight but it works fine.
Infinitys 4x6 from Crutchfield-call them they may be able to help you.

I am trying Not to cut any parts. As a last resort I could by an extra set of kick panels to cut up.

Well im not sure if you would wanna do this but cutting a hole in the kick panel can have its advantages. First of all those little holes in the factory kick panel are gonna restrict sound quality. Second if you cut holes for speakers then you can mount the speaker flange on the outside of the kick panel and use the grills that came with the speakers. With them mounted on the outside the magnets will be further outward and have more room for clearence on the inside. If you dont wanna cut yur kick panels cause ther'ye the original pieces or whatever, you can always remove them and get a set of repros and cut them and save yur originals should you decide to need em for a sale of the car or a show or whatever. When I did some sound testing at Circut City I found the high end 4" rounds sounded better than any 4x6 they had. So i went with Kenwood 4" rounds for $90 and cut holes in the kick panels. Most of my sound comes from Alpine 6x9's in the rear and the Kenwoods in front add fill for the surround effect. They still sound pretty good on thier own though. Like I said, at the store they sounded better than any of the 4x6's.

then the best thing to do is leave what you got, good sound takes modifications.

I looked at crutchfield.. What model did you get? They have one of those plate speakers on sale right now.

At this point I couldn't tell you--they've been in for atleast 2 yrs. You should call them and see what they suggest--Crutchfield isn't always the cheapest but their service is great. There are many 4x6 plate speakers out there and they guarranty fit!

I just checked Crutchfield--I believe I had the reference plate speakers(ON SALE 4652cfp-round speaker). I don't think the full size 4x6 speaker will fit--only round. If it were me, I would look into JBL's they have on sale(P-6432)-it depends on your system--if you have a amp or not. The JBL's might need an amp to power that output-but for the price seems like a better deal!
