My 77 drivers side power window goes up OK but does not want to come down - So far I can get it to work (eventually) if I play around a bit by opening and closing the door but it takes a while. At first I thought it was the switch and I have replaced it with a new one from GM - with no change. What should I look for next??? Bad ground etc. Any ideas and "how to" will be appreciated. Thanks.
On my 77 I think the gear is partialy stripped because the window will roll up to about the 3/4 point then stop. I can pull the window the rest of the way up by hand. When I drive, bumps in the road vibrate the window down some (a real pain when its raining). When the window is fully up it won't roll down until I position it down to the 3/4 point. When the window is above the 3/4 point I hear the motor turning. You may have a flat spot on the gear and moving the door may vibrate to a position where it catches, also it may not be going fully up. I would also check the wire connector at the motor, it may be corroded causing intermittent operation. :smash:
If you have a service and assembly manual, take the door panel off and check it out. The whole thing isn't that complicated. You might need to just clean old grease off, or replace the motor's gear. Not hard, just check the manual for hints and be sure to bolt the spring before you separate the motor from it if you need to change the gear. Relube with white lithuim grease and you should be good to go.
PS Be sure to make any channel's position before you remove it to help keep it lined up.

Since you have knowledge in the Spring area of the window; i have a questions for you.
First, i had to replace the spring in my pass side door becusae it was broken. Yesterday i got the new spring in the mail, puti it on, and cleaned up all the old grease and what not.
The question is regarding the spring; this spring is brand new and tight as hell!!! Now i didnt use any special method of putting the new spring on i just did the following:
- Put the gears in the UP position
- installed the spring the only way it could go on (which was kind of tight anyway)
Is it supposed to be this tight? i'm worried that the motor will not be able to pull it down.. :banghead: :cry
Sorry, I missed this eariler, but I have only worked on my old ones and have not had to replace one yet. If you followed instructions, it should be right. Maybe someone else has been there and can help here.
okay I have a question here as well. How in the world do you get the regulator assembly OUT of the door! I have tried and tried and I can't seem to find the a way to get it all out. The gear is worn out along with the whole mechnism. I bought a new one but have as of yet to get the old one out. :cry
