who has done it and what are your secrets? I just got the springs with and order I placed with Wilcox and I have absolutely no idea how to do this, but it needs to be done.
Here's a scanned picture of the instruction sheet I picked up somewhere. You need a cheap screwdriver (bend the tip as in the diagram) and follow the instructions. A very easy job.
Put an old towel or shop rag in the space below the hinge between the door and body to catch the spring and protect the sill paint the first couple of times you drop the spring fiddling to get it in place. Don't get too frustrated. The second one will be easier. The special tool or bent screwdriver (what I have) is necessary to lever it so you can tap it up into the hole with a small hammer or wooden mallet. Good luck!
just want to add, my new springs kept jumping out every so often, so I had to put round plug through upper loop of spring and now has never popped out.

Mine did the same thing and turns out it was slightly bent on one of the S curves and not going into the hole far enough. Straightened the spring and no more problems.
Save your self some trouble and buy the tool. I tried bending the screw driver and it was so soft that it would not hold the bend enough to get the spring in place.
I bought a set and one of them had the flat machine 90 Deg. off so it would not stay in . As soon as I shut the door the spring would pop back out. I studied the other side closely and saw the problem. The factory spring were made in left and right sides. The replacements are not but should still work fine.. The one I had was actually made wrong.
