Default Differential Cover torque specs?

I am using a reusable gasket for the differential cover, but when I torque the cover to about 50-60 pounds, the gasket wants to ooze out. The manufacturer, Ratech, says that 15-20 pounds is sufficient. This seems way too low for a part that holds up the rear suspension and must take the torque load of the engine as well.

My manuals simply say "tighten sufficiently". Not a big help.

Van Steel's specs say 50 lb-ft. Can you do that?

Chuck- Have you tried staging the torque to the gasket?

Start at about 15-20 and go up? Maybe distributing the torque load will keep the gasket even on all sides.

Lemme know if you'd like a second hand any of these days.

Thanks Steve and Guppie for the help! I used a standard Felpro paper gasket instead and torqued to 50#. Actually I went to 55, I don't want to worry about that cover shifting under a 1-2 power shift.
