I have had that annoying chattering noise from the posi traction and tried pretty much everthing I read here on the forum without luck. I tried the additives and the figure 8's but it just wouldn't go away. I talked to a guy who rebuilds differentials and he told me to try this:
Drain differential
Add two quarts of Risloan
Let the wheels spin on a lift for about 5 minutes
Drain the Risloan
Add two quarts of 90w oil
Let the wheels spin on a lift for about 5 minutes
Drain the oil
Add 1 or 2 tubes of posi traction additive
Fill the rest with 85w - 140w oil
Voila! This worked. He said sometimes you just need to work the sludge out.
I put in synthetic oil (not sure if that will make a difference in the long run).
I do notice a really slight leak at the pinion seal now (maybe getting rid of the sludge help caused this because it wasn't leaking before)
Only bad thing about that method is that it is not recomended to let the tires rotate while up in the air, the angle of the half shafts and u-joints can cause binding and excessive wear on them. But I guess the cost of 4 u-joints is less then a complete rear rebuild.
