my friend and I are going to attempt to rebuild the tilt-tele wheel on his 70. he has had it apart before and jerry rigged it but we want to do it right this time. can anyone offer suggestions about best place to obtain the parts necessary to do the rebuild and any tips to insure we do it correctly.? thanks.

 

Don, you want to get in touch with a guy on here named Jim Shea. He is the man when it comes to the steering column and steering system. He is retired from the Saginaw plant. This must be for bunkybirds car.

I have quite complete instructions on disassembly and repair of the Corvette T&T steering column. You will need to go to http://www.corvettefaq.com and look in the Steering section. There is quite a bit to download, but you will find almost everything that you will ever need. The following are the T&T column papers:

Many of the replacement parts can be obtained through GM dealers as well as many of the Corvette suppliers. There is one other paper at the sight that you might find of value. Take a look at:

So depending upon how extensive your column rebuild is going to be. The above papers and this Forum should be able to get you through it.

The above is all great information. The one place many people get in trouble is re-fitting or removal of the main shaft which is actually 2 pieces with a crush joint. Be careful, go slow and you shouldn't have any trouble. If you can down load the exploded parts view it should be pretty much self-explanatory.
