I'm in the Chicago area and was wondering what a 4-wheel alignment should cost if I just rebuilt both the front and rear suspensions. A Corvette shop in the area was very costly compared to a local basic shop. Is there a lot of work to get everything aligned?
I spent 79 dollars at Just Tires in Carol Stream last summer. Took the tech 2 and a half hours with me by his side. Car drove like new when he was done....
I took it to a good local shop with a good machine. $150
Not too hard, just the equipment involved. Shims for the upper CA in the front for caster/camber, toe is on the steering tie rods.
In the rear, camber is controlled by either an eccentric cam bolt or an adjustable length rod. Stock is the bolt, the adjustable rods are definitely the way to go! Toe is controlled by shims by the trailing arm mounting point.
There are shops around that can do it for less than say D&M.. They wanted 300 bux for mine, but I found a local guy at the Firestone dealer who knew vetts and did it in 2 hours for 150 bux..I called a lot of shops and asked to talk to the 'Alignment Guy' If they didn't know about the shims in the back, I moved on..The work involved in the rear, requires the tech to move the shims around on the front of the trailing arm, inner, outer, left, right until it hits the number.. So, tires off, adjust, tires on, measure, tires off, adjust..etc
there are articles posted here, or the addy's are, for DIY alignment, and I have followed what they say and been VERY h appy with the results...and the results are repeatable too.....so much so, I have some fishing line with loops in it all set up for the 4 jackstands I use in wheel alignment work....makes things quick to set up and measure is easy.....
FAR BETTER than about 90% of the so called alignment shops....
