Default 1980 Air Vent Selector Experts

Need some troubleshooting tips as all air is coming out of vents at my feet!!!

I understand the system is vaccum driven but don't have clue on how to check it as I don't understand the operation of the selector system.

Troubleshooting tips really needed!!!

Under the center console at the blower vent selector, there's a vacuum switch that control all the flaps. Look there, the selector is made of plastic and sometime, it can seperate and cause that problem.

Other than that, you have a vacuum source from the engine that enter by the firewall a little to the right side of the wiper motor. Check if the hose is in place.

I have the same problem in my 79. here is how i checked it.
grap a vacuum testor/source. i used the one i bought for bleeding brakes.
remove the side tunnel panel from both sides.
using the assembly manual or vaccuum diagram, find the vacuum source line. verify that vacuum is present. if it is not, it is a whole in the line, bad check valve or something at the source. The selector for defrost is vacuum operated. 1st i verifed that i could move it manually. then i used the vacuum testor and verified that vacuum will move the actuator. all these tested out in my case. the only problem is with the switch. I do not know if it is rebuildable or not. I do not know if you can purchase just the switch. I do know you can purchase a whole swith assebly. when its cool and i need defrost i have a length of vacuum tubing connected to the defroster actuator. i use my vacuum pump to activate the actuator. and viola! defrost. i have enought hose that the vacuum tester rests on the center consol.

Mines functional again as well... it was a cracked vaccume line coming from the intake manifold. Replaced with a new hose and it works like a charm. :hurray:
