sounds like its really low on timing...so low that you can't get a read...try turning the distributer while the car is running....it is running i take it?

Pull the cap, then look for the timing mark on the harmonic balancer, line it up with 0 degree mark on tab, then make sure the rotor is pointing to number 1 plug wire in cap, start it up, get timing light and time it properly :D
