Help and advice needed please!!
I have an '81 and it has developed a high pitched whine that seems to be coming from the front off the engine around the belts. I have changed the water pump and disconnected the smog pump to eliminate that. It is NOT a screetch but a whine that gets higher in pitch the faster the motor is revved.
I am thinking that it may the power steering pump as it seems to be that side of the engine.
Your thoughts please.
Paul. :banghead: :banghead:

Possibly check to see of your valve covers are properly vented. My ZZ4 did that and it was due to no vent in the valve covers and the noise was air being sucked through the rear main seal.

Have you thought of/checked the alternator? Sounds a bit like the symptom I had on another car of mine some years ago. After about a week the noise got worse and eventually the alternator seized the day before I planned to get to it to change it! Got the RAC to do it free! (UK Roadside recovery company) It may be worth a look?

Does sound like it's coming from that area, will disconnect alternator and see if it stops.

Just realised that you're only down the road! Keep me posted on the car. And, if you fancy getting together with other owners, come along to our club nights. We've got a web page, but alas, as my home PC has died I can't get to it to update it at the moment! Let me know if you fancy it... or a trip to Groombridge this Sunday!

Hi Stephen :seeya
Paul,
This may sound a bit dumb & obvious, but have you checked your power steering fluid level? My old F*rd started whining (it's female :D ) & it was due to low fluid. Thought I'd chuck a nice, easy one in there! But yes, sounds like it could be the alternator. Also have a look at the viscous fan & check for bad wear/play.

A bit early in married life for this sort of remark isn't it ;) :D And, of course, if you fancy a trip over to the GArden of England on Sunday we'd be pleased to see you!

:iagree:
Mine whines pretty good if the PS fluid is low.

Hi Stephen,
What's happening on Sunday? And what time does it finish?

Sunday is "Wings, Wheels & Steam", Groombridge Place. I think we have about 10 cars going along. Also contingents from the RR owners Club, Bentley DC, Porsche Kent Area Region Annual meeting, plus other interesting "stuff", including a few Steam Engines usually. Need to be there by 11:00 (we're meeting at West Malling to cruise over) and they like you to stay on 'till about 4:30 - 5:00, but that's not obligatory! It was pre entry, but I think I have a spare ticket, but they won't really mind one extra in the line I'm sure, if you fancy it?

Hi Stephen,
Steam Engines & Vettes sounds great. Does the "Wings" part imply a few Spits as well? Or a Lancaster :D :D :D
I'll try to make it. Problem is that there's 2 40th parties the night before, one is in a pub til closing time & the other is an all nighter. Why do we still have all night parties? To convince ourselves that we're not getting old & can still handle it ;)
Hopefully see you Sunday.
