Replacing Heater Core - 69 Conv. w/Air

I have a leaking heater core on my 69, mostly when I step on it. Leaks into the passenger side footwell toward center of car.

Can the heater core be replaced by accessing only from the cockpit?
In some descriptions, including the service manual, access is gained from both the cockpit and removing the air box from the engine compartment. Although this was for those without air conditioning.
I've seen another description for replacement with air that was done completely from the cockpit.

Looking at Juliet's photos, it appears that it can be done from the interior alone.

Yes, it can be done from the interior alone with the except for some (1 or 2 if memory serves)fasteners in the engine compartment. if you have an assebley manual it will help, as there is one nut on the engine side down low that needs to come off in order to get the housing out in the passenger compartment. I knew something was holding it up, and for me it took a while of looking at the assembly manual to find the 1 lone nut that was keeping me from being able to pull it out. I did mine about three years ago, major PITA, plan on it taking a full day. and make sure you buy the gasket kit for you heater ductwork, and heater box, now is the time since it will all be out anyway.

You are in for some real fun............... :cry The car is basically built around the Heater Core. Having done mine in my 74 with air it was not much fun :cry

just make sure to test "new" heater core before you install. I just purchased one for non-AC and it leaked. Used the bicycle intertube method mentioned here recently, then dunked in bucket of water to see leak.

This is done from the inside. Remove the seats to give you the extra room you need, and DISCONNECT the battery! Don't ask me how I know...

Also, plan on more than one day just so you don't have to hurry. Re-seal all the ducts, insulate the firewall, new hoses, etc... This is also a good time to seal up the outside air door if you so choose. Not a bad job if you take your time. Good luck!
