ok...i drive a 79 corvette....now....today it started not wanting to crank.....like....when i turn the key its getting no power anywhere....no radio, lights nothing.....if i let it sit for while it cranks up but the alternator is charging at 18 instead of 14......does anyone have any reason y it might be doing this? i was figuring a loose ignition wire, but the alternator charging at 18 wouldnt be a sign of that i wouldnt imagine...
Re: i need help with saomething please (Ebbsvette)
Sounds like an electrical problem. Start by removing the battery connections and clean them up to shiny metal on both ends of both wires.
How long have you been driving the car? Have you done any electrical part replacements recently, like starter motor, that could have gotten hooked up wrong?
Re: i need help with saomething please (Ebbsvette)
The only thing that i can suggest is that you check and clean all your major wiring connections to starter, batt, and alternator. if that doesn't clear anything up have your alt. checked as it could be something internal.
I'm no pro but have had some wierd things happen electrically.
At the least this will put you back to the top where someone a little more knowledgable on the subject might chime in
my battery connects have recently been cleaned.......and about 2 months ago i replaced the alternator and about 3 days ago i replaced the battery.......i was thinking it could be a bad relay....but i have no clue......
Re: i need help with saomething please (Ebbsvette)
when the symptoms occur, try hooking up a remote starter switch or at least see if you have power going to it.
I had a car with similar problems caused by the nuetral safety switch. All accessories would work until I tried to crank the car, no matter if it was in, park or nuetral.

Try rechecking the connections to the alternator. Make sure they are on the right posts and tight. Do you have a manual and wiring diagram?

Re: i need help with saomething please (LAvetteman)
When you say charging at 18, do you mean volts? If so it sounds like the voltage regulator is gone. You may have boiled your battery out. My regulator went out on my 79 and in five minutes I had a mess at my battery because of boiling.
A little story on the bad voltage regulator. I had an aftermarket radio that just kept going off when I would give it the gas. When I slowed down the radio would come back on. ??? I finally noticed the voltmeter showing around 18 volts. The radio was protecting itself. I drove straight home and the battery had boiled and made a mess of the battery compartment. New alternator and all was well.
I had nearly the same thing happen to me with the radio kicking out... In my case the radio would keep going, but my amplifier would kick out so my bass would just cut out completely, then it would come back when I slowed down... Anyhow, if you mean 18 volts, that is *WAY* too high, most likely cause would be a bad regulator, especially given that you replaced the alternator within the last few months. I've had terrible luck with aftermarket rebuilt alternators on my car. I think I'm on number 3 or 4 at this point, but I don't recall for sure. At least they are lifetime warranty and I do my own work...
thats for the help guys....yup...problem was a bad regulator.....good thing i always keep a spare alternator.....now to just find out why they always go bad....this is my....4th-5th alternator this year...all different brands
