Re: Found a TKB Big block today, but.... (Budman78)
What will you use it for? The 396 had a small bore, and cannot be bored out to the size of a 427/454, so it's not usually a good choice for a performance buildup.

What is 'TKB'?
I always loved the look of the '396' badge and the sound of words 396 when spoken, guess it's the numeric relation. 454 badging never was as cool looking as 396 or 427. Guess I'm weird like that. :)
Typical GM block stamp on the front of the block. They all have 3 letters and can be track to the original car or truck type. It is the easiest way to identify a block.

 Gotta be carefull of the people who think they know what they got or are just trying to rip you off.
Budman:
There is nothing wrong with a 396 big block. The motors CAN be made to run with the best of them. However, it is easier to start with a bigger cubic inch motor. It will cost just about the same money to build up a 396 as it will a 454....or a 496 for that matter. If you got a good deal on the motor I'd say go for it....if the deal isn't so sweet I'd look for a 427 or larger.
