Differential cover removal
Need to remove the diff. cover on my 79. Any reason why I cannot remove the rear spring from the bottom of the cover and remove the top bolts by cutting an access hole in the rear storage area under the carpet. This will eliminate the need to disconect the crossmember mounts, drive shaft etc. etc.

Mike you could do that, it's an old trick with these cars. If you're not going to remove the housing then it's going to be tricky. The cover holds 90% of the differentials weight, the only other point is the front bracket with 2 side bolts through it. You will have to support it very well. I would drop the whole differential out with the crossmember attached. then you can get at everything for a good look. The one I'm just finishing up looked ok in the car but when we got it out found the side seals were leaking badly,the yokes were shot, and "buibba" was in there in the past.

Ive done it both ways. Its definatly easier to drop the whole assembly, diff, cover and crossmember togeather. Knocking something apart is the easy part. Its when it comes to putting it back togeather thats a pain. Definatly easier as a unit.
